Today my 10 year old decided he wanted to bake a cake for his creative learning time.  While we don’t really need cake in our house, it was important to say yes to cake baking.

One of my favorite go to cakes is the Simple Butter Cake from Susie Quick, Quick Simple Food.  We usually have all ingredients on hand.  It makes an 8-inch round one layer cake that can be served simple with a dusting of powdered sugar, fancy with some strawberries and whipped cream or even iced and decorated by the kid who baked it.

The great thing about baking is while kids are having fun they are learning real life skills, measuring, pouring, sifting, mixing.  And they are working on fine motor skills.

Start where they are at, not where you want them to be.  Expect a mess and even some mistakes.  Remember the goal isn’t a perfect cake.  It’s the fun and learning in the process of making a cake.
